Microneedling
Controlled micro-injury that provokes collagen production, with far less pigmentation risk than laser in deeper skin tones.

01 · Understanding the concern
Why patients consider this
Acne scarring, enlarged pores and general textural roughness sit below the surface and do not improve with skincare alone. Microneedling addresses them mechanically, and because it does not deliver heat to the epidermis in the way ablative laser does, it is often a safer starting point for pigmented skin.
02 · The procedure
What microneedling involves
Fine needles create controlled micro-channels in the skin at a set depth, triggering a wound-healing response that produces new collagen. Depth is adjusted for the area and the concern. Radiofrequency microneedling delivers additional energy at depth for firmer results in selected cases. Treatment is given as a course with reassessment between sessions.
03 · Candidacy
Who may be considered
This is general guidance rather than a diagnosis. Suitability is decided by examination.
- Acne scarring, particularly rolling and boxcar types
- Enlarged pores and rough texture
- Fine lines and early laxity
- Deeper skin tones where laser pigmentation risk is a concern
- No active acne infection or skin infection at the site
What it can address
Concerns it is used for
- Rolling and boxcar acne scars
- Pore appearance
- Skin texture
- Fine lines
- Stretch marks, in selected cases

04 · Planning
Why the planning matters more than the technique
Scar type determines whether microneedling is the right tool. Rolling scars respond reasonably; ice-pick scars usually need a different technique such as subcision or focal treatment. Setting that out before the course starts prevents a course of treatment aimed at the wrong scar type.
05 · How it works
Step by step
- 01
Assessment
Scar type and skin condition assessed, and photographs taken as a baseline.
- 02
Preparation
Topical anaesthetic applied and the skin cleansed.
- 03
Treatment
Needling performed at planned depths across the area.
- 04
Post-treatment care
Barrier repair and sun protection applied and prescribed.
- 05
Course
Sessions repeated at planned intervals.
- 06
Review
Reassessment against baseline photographs.
06 · The procedure journey
Before, during and after
Before
Stop retinoids and actives as instructed, avoid sun exposure, and inform the clinic of any cold sore history.
During
Topical anaesthetic is applied first. The procedure feels like vibration and pressure; sessions are short.
After
Redness resembling sunburn for one to two days, with mild flaking afterwards.
07 · Recovery
What recovery generally involves
Most people are presentable within a day or two. Makeup is avoided for the period advised. Sun protection is essential. Improvement builds across the course and continues afterwards as collagen remodels.
Recovery times are general ranges. Your own timeline depends on the extent of treatment, your health and your work, and is given at consultation.
- Sun protection daily
- No makeup for the period advised
- Gentle cleansing and barrier repair only
- No actives or exfoliation until cleared
- Expect results to build over months, not days
08 · Outcomes
What to expect from the result
Gradual improvement in texture, scarring and firmness across a course. Scars are improved rather than erased. Results vary and are not guaranteed.
09 · Safety
Risks and considerations
Risks include prolonged redness, infection, cold sore reactivation, and post-inflammatory pigmentation, which is less common than with laser but still possible. Sterile technique and appropriate depth are the relevant safeguards.
No procedure is risk-free. A full, individual discussion of risk forms part of consent and takes place before any decision is made.
10 · The surgeon
Why Dr. Swikriti Raniwala
The surgeon who assesses you performs the procedure and reviews you afterwards. Surgical work takes place in accredited surgical facilities with board-certified anaesthesiologists, and you leave the consultation with the plan and the costs in writing.

Questions patients ask
Microneedling: common questions
Is microneedling better than laser for acne scars?
It is often safer in deeper skin tones and effective for rolling scars. Laser may achieve more for certain scar types. Combination is common.
How many sessions do I need?
Usually a course spaced weeks apart, with the number depending on scar severity.
Is it painful?
Topical anaesthetic makes it tolerable for most people. It feels like pressure and vibration.
Can I do this at home with a roller?
Home devices do not reach effective depths and carry infection risk. Clinical treatment is a different procedure.
What is radiofrequency microneedling?
The same micro-channels with added energy delivered at depth, used where firmness as well as texture is the goal.
When will I see a difference?
Texture changes appear across the course, with continued improvement for months afterwards.
