PRP Therapy for Hair
Your own platelets, concentrated and injected into the scalp, used as a support to medical treatment rather than a substitute for it.

01 · Understanding the concern
Why patients consider this
PRP is widely offered and widely oversold. It is reasonable as an adjunct in selected patterns of hair loss, particularly early thinning where follicles are miniaturising but still present. It is not a treatment for areas that have been bald for years, and it works better alongside medical therapy than instead of it.
02 · The procedure
What prp therapy for hair involves
A sample of your blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge to separate a platelet-rich fraction. That fraction is injected across the affected areas of the scalp in a grid. Sessions are usually given as an initial course spaced a few weeks apart, followed by maintenance if there has been a response.
03 · Candidacy
Who may be considered
This is general guidance rather than a diagnosis. Suitability is decided by examination.
- Early or moderate thinning where follicles are miniaturising rather than gone
- Patients already on medical treatment who want to add to it
- Some cases of shedding after illness or stress, once the cause is addressed
- Support around the time of a transplant, where advised
What it can address
Concerns it is used for
- Diffuse thinning
- Widening parting
- Reduced hair calibre
- Scalp treated alongside medical therapy

04 · Planning
Why the planning matters more than the technique
A course is planned upfront with a defined review point. If there is no measurable change against baseline photographs by the agreed review, continuing is not recommended.
05 · How it works
Step by step
- 01
Baseline
Photographs and scalp assessment before the first session.
- 02
Blood draw
A standard venous sample taken in clinic.
- 03
Preparation
The sample is centrifuged to concentrate the platelet fraction.
- 04
Injection
The scalp is injected in a grid across the treatment area, usually with topical anaesthetic.
- 05
Course
Sessions repeated at the agreed interval.
- 06
Review
Reassessment against baseline before any maintenance is planned.
06 · The procedure journey
Before, during and after
Before
Eat and hydrate normally before the appointment. Avoid alcohol the night before.
During
A clinic appointment, usually under an hour including preparation. Injections are uncomfortable rather than painful for most people.
After
Scalp tenderness and mild swelling for up to a day or two. Normal activity is resumed the same day.
07 · Recovery
What recovery generally involves
There is no meaningful downtime. Hair washing is usually resumed the following day. Exercise, sauna and steam are avoided briefly as instructed.
Recovery times are general ranges. Your own timeline depends on the extent of treatment, your health and your work, and is given at consultation.
- No hair colouring or chemical treatment for the period advised
- Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours
- Expect tenderness rather than pain
- Keep the course appointments; irregular sessions make assessment meaningless
08 · Outcomes
What to expect from the result
Where PRP helps, patients typically report reduced shedding and improved hair calibre rather than new growth in bald areas. Response varies, is not universal, and is not guaranteed.
09 · Safety
Risks and considerations
Because the material is autologous, allergic reaction is not a usual concern. Risks relate to the injections themselves: bruising, tenderness, swelling and, rarely, infection. PRP is not appropriate in certain blood and skin conditions, which is why history is taken first.
No procedure is risk-free. A full, individual discussion of risk forms part of consent and takes place before any decision is made.

Why Dr. Swikriti Raniwala

Questions patients ask
PRP Therapy for Hair: common questions
How many PRP sessions will I need?
An initial course of several sessions spaced a few weeks apart is typical, with the exact schedule set at consultation.
Does PRP regrow hair on a bald scalp?
No. It is used where follicles are still present but weakening, not in areas that have been bald for years.
Is it painful?
Most people describe it as uncomfortable. Topical anaesthetic is used, and the appointment is short.
Can I have PRP after a hair transplant?
It is sometimes used around the time of surgery. Timing is decided by the surgeon.
Can I combine PRP with medication?
Usually yes, and the combination is often more sensible than PRP alone.
How soon will I know if it is working?
Assessment is made against baseline photographs at the agreed review point, generally after the initial course.
