Neck Lift
The neck often ages before the face and is the first thing that gives an otherwise well-maintained face away.

01 · Understanding the concern
Why patients consider this
Neck laxity shows up as a loss of the angle between the jaw and the neck, vertical bands running down the front, and fullness under the chin that persists at a normal weight. Some of this is fat, some is loose skin, and some is the platysma muscle separating in the midline. Each needs a different answer, which is why a single procedure name covers several different operations.
02 · The procedure
What neck lift involves
Neck lift surgery may involve liposuction of submental fat, tightening of the platysma muscle in the midline, and removal or redraping of excess skin through incisions under the chin and around the ears. For a young neck with good skin and isolated fat, liposuction alone may be sufficient. For an established neck with banding and laxity, muscle and skin work are needed.
03 · Candidacy
Who may be considered
This is general guidance rather than a diagnosis. Suitability is decided by examination.
- Loss of jawline definition
- Vertical neck bands visible at rest
- Submental fullness at a stable weight
- Reasonable skin quality
- Non-smokers or able to stop as advised
What it can address
Concerns it is used for
- The jaw-to-neck angle
- Platysmal banding
- Fullness under the chin
- Loose neck skin

04 · Planning
Why the planning matters more than the technique
Chin projection is assessed at the same time. A weak chin makes the neck look fuller than it is, and treating the neck alone in that situation gives an incomplete result. Where the face has also descended, a neck lift alone can create a mismatch between a defined neck and an undefined jawline.
05 · How it works
Step by step
- 01
Assessment
Skin, fat, muscle and chin projection assessed separately.
- 02
Planning
Which components need addressing, and whether facial work should be included.
- 03
Liposuction
Submental fat treated where present.
- 04
Platysma repair
Muscle bands tightened in the midline where indicated.
- 05
Skin redraping
Excess skin redraped and trimmed through incisions under the chin and around the ears.
- 06
Support dressing
Dressing or garment applied and reviews scheduled.
06 · The procedure journey
Before, during and after
Before
Investigations, anaesthetic assessment, stopping smoking as advised.
During
General anaesthetic in most cases; limited procedures may be performed under local with sedation.
After
Swelling, bruising and a support garment. Neck movement is restricted initially.
07 · Recovery
What recovery generally involves
Swelling in the neck is slow to settle and can look worse before better. Most people return to work at around two weeks, with residual swelling and firmness for longer. Numbness under the chin is common and improves over months.
Recovery times are general ranges. Your own timeline depends on the extent of treatment, your health and your work, and is given at consultation.
- Wear the support garment as instructed
- Avoid neck flexion and heavy lifting early
- Expect firmness under the chin for some weeks
- Sleep elevated initially
- Attend scheduled reviews
08 · Outcomes
What to expect from the result
Improved jaw-to-neck definition, with permanent but well-placed scars. Ageing continues. Results vary and are not guaranteed.
09 · Safety
Risks and considerations
Risks include haematoma, contour irregularity, persistent banding, altered sensation, nerve injury affecting lip movement in rare cases, and scarring. Individual risk is discussed at consultation.
No procedure is risk-free. A full, individual discussion of risk forms part of consent and takes place before any decision is made.

Questions patients ask
Neck Lift: common questions
Can liposuction alone define my jawline?
Only where fat is the sole issue and skin quality is good. Where muscle bands or laxity are present, more is needed.
Will a neck lift help a double chin?
It can, where the fullness is fat or lax tissue. Where a weak chin contributes, that is assessed too.
Do I need a facelift as well?
Sometimes. Treating the neck alone when the face has also descended can produce a mismatch.
How visible are the scars?
Placed under the chin and around the ears, following natural creases, and generally inconspicuous once mature.
How long is recovery?
Around two weeks before most people return to work, with residual swelling for longer.
Are non-surgical options worth trying first?
For early laxity, sometimes. For established banding and skin excess, they are unlikely to be sufficient.
