Chemical Peels
A controlled exfoliation, prescribed by depth and agent rather than chosen by name. Depth is what determines both the result and the risk.

01 · Understanding the concern
Why patients consider this
Dullness, uneven tone, superficial pigmentation and congested skin respond well to controlled exfoliation. The complication that matters in Indian skin is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which can be provoked by peels that are too deep or too frequent, leaving the skin darker than before.
02 · The procedure
What chemical peels involves
A chemical agent is applied for a controlled time to remove the outer layers of skin at a defined depth. Superficial peels affect the epidermis and have minimal downtime; medium-depth peels reach the upper dermis with more visible peeling and greater effect. Agent, concentration and contact time are selected for your skin type and the specific concern.
03 · Candidacy
Who may be considered
This is general guidance rather than a diagnosis. Suitability is decided by examination.
- Uneven tone or superficial pigmentation
- Congested or textured skin
- Mild acne and post-acne marks
- Skin prepared with appropriate topical treatment beforehand
- No active infection, recent isotretinoin use or recent sun exposure
What it can address
Concerns it is used for
- Dullness and uneven tone
- Superficial pigmentation
- Congested pores
- Mild acne
- Post-acne marks
- Fine textural change

04 · Planning
Why the planning matters more than the technique
Skin preparation before the first peel is what separates a good outcome from pigmentation afterwards. Priming topicals, sun avoidance and realistic spacing between sessions are all part of the protocol, and a peel performed on unprepared skin in an Indian summer is a predictable problem.
05 · How it works
Step by step
- 01
Assessment
Skin type, concern and history of pigmentation assessed.
- 02
Priming
Topical preparation for a period before the first peel where indicated.
- 03
Test where needed
A test area in patients with a history of pigmentation.
- 04
Peel
Agent applied for a controlled contact time, neutralised where required.
- 05
Aftercare
Sun protection and barrier repair instructions.
- 06
Course
Sessions repeated at planned intervals with reassessment.
06 · The procedure journey
Before, during and after
Before
Use the priming regime as prescribed, avoid sun exposure and waxing before the appointment, and stop retinoids as instructed.
During
A short clinic appointment with tingling or stinging during application.
After
Redness, tightness and flaking for a few days depending on depth. Medium peels visibly peel for several days.
07 · Recovery
What recovery generally involves
Superficial peels usually allow normal activity immediately with mild flaking. Medium peels involve several days of visible peeling. Strict sun protection is essential throughout, and picking at peeling skin is the most common cause of marks afterwards.
Recovery times are general ranges. Your own timeline depends on the extent of treatment, your health and your work, and is given at consultation.
- Daily broad-spectrum sun protection, without exception
- Do not pick or pull peeling skin
- Use barrier repair products as prescribed
- No waxing, scrubs or retinoids until cleared
- Keep to the planned session intervals
08 · Outcomes
What to expect from the result
Improvement in tone, texture and superficial pigmentation over a course rather than after a single session. Maintenance is usually needed. Results vary and are not guaranteed.
09 · Safety
Risks and considerations
Risks include post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, particularly in deeper skin tones, prolonged redness, infection, and rarely scarring with deeper peels. Case selection, priming and sun protection are the main safeguards.
No procedure is risk-free. A full, individual discussion of risk forms part of consent and takes place before any decision is made.

Questions patients ask
Chemical Peels: common questions
Are chemical peels safe for Indian skin?
Yes, when depth and agent are selected appropriately and the skin is primed. The main risk to manage is post-inflammatory pigmentation.
How many sessions will I need?
Usually a course spaced over weeks, with the number depending on the concern and depth used.
Will my skin visibly peel?
Superficial peels often cause only mild flaking. Medium peels produce visible peeling for several days.
Can I have a peel before an event?
Allow adequate time, particularly for medium-depth peels. Plan at consultation rather than at short notice.
Do peels help acne scars?
They help surface marks and texture. Deeper scarring usually needs microneedling, laser or combination treatment.
What must I do afterwards?
Sun protection daily, no picking, and the prescribed barrier care. These are not optional parts of the treatment.
