Chin Augmentation
Often the missing half of a profile problem that the patient attributes entirely to their nose.

01 · Understanding the concern
Why patients consider this
A chin that sits behind the ideal profile line makes the nose look larger and the neck look fuller, regardless of either. People frequently arrive asking about rhinoplasty and leave having discussed the chin, because changing the nose alone would exaggerate the imbalance rather than correct it.
02 · The procedure
What chin augmentation involves
Chin augmentation most commonly uses a shaped implant placed on the bone through an incision inside the mouth or under the chin, sized to the projection needed. Fat transfer or fillers can address minor deficiencies. Where the discrepancy is skeletal and significant, or the bite is affected, orthognathic assessment rather than an implant may be the right route.
03 · Candidacy
Who may be considered
This is general guidance rather than a diagnosis. Suitability is decided by examination.
- A chin that sits noticeably behind the profile line
- Patients considering rhinoplasty, where profile balance is part of the picture
- A normal bite, or willingness to be assessed if not
- Good dental and gum health where intraoral access is planned
- Medically fit for the anaesthetic planned
What it can address
Concerns it is used for
- Profile projection
- Apparent nose size, indirectly
- Jaw-to-neck definition, indirectly
- Chin width and shape

04 · Planning
Why the planning matters more than the technique
Profile analysis is done on photographs with the nose, lips and chin considered as one relationship. Where a patient is also having rhinoplasty, planning the two together prevents a corrected nose sitting above an uncorrected chin.
05 · How it works
Step by step
- 01
Profile analysis
Photographic and clinical assessment of nose, lips and chin together.
- 02
Sizing
Implant projection and width selected against measurements.
- 03
Access
Incision inside the mouth or beneath the chin.
- 04
Placement
Implant positioned on the bone and secured, with symmetry checked.
- 05
Closure
Layered closure and supportive dressing or tape.
- 06
Review
Follow-up to assess position and settling.
06 · The procedure journey
Before, during and after
Before
Dental review where intraoral access is planned, investigations and anaesthetic assessment.
During
Local anaesthetic with sedation or general anaesthetic, depending on the approach and any combined procedures.
After
Swelling and tightness around the chin and lower lip, with a supportive tape or dressing initially.
07 · Recovery
What recovery generally involves
Swelling settles over two to three weeks, with the final contour visible later. A soft diet and oral hygiene measures are needed where the incision is inside the mouth. Lower lip numbness is common early and generally improves.
Recovery times are general ranges. Your own timeline depends on the extent of treatment, your health and your work, and is given at consultation.
- Soft diet and mouth rinses where intraoral access was used
- Avoid pressure or impact on the chin
- Expect temporary lower lip numbness
- Sleep elevated initially
- Attend reviews to confirm implant position
08 · Outcomes
What to expect from the result
Improved profile projection and balance. Implants are devices and can, uncommonly, require repositioning or removal. Results vary and are not guaranteed.
09 · Safety
Risks and considerations
Risks include implant malposition or shift, infection requiring removal, altered lower lip or chin sensation, bone resorption beneath the implant over time, and asymmetry. Alternatives, including fat transfer and skeletal surgery, are discussed where relevant.
No procedure is risk-free. A full, individual discussion of risk forms part of consent and takes place before any decision is made.
10 · The surgeon
Why Dr. Swikriti Raniwala
The surgeon who assesses you performs the procedure and reviews you afterwards. Surgical work takes place in accredited surgical facilities with board-certified anaesthesiologists, and you leave the consultation with the plan and the costs in writing.

Questions patients ask
Chin Augmentation: common questions
Should I have rhinoplasty or chin augmentation?
Sometimes both, sometimes just one. Profile analysis at consultation shows which element is driving the imbalance.
Are fillers an alternative?
For minor deficiency, they can be. For significant projection change, an implant or skeletal surgery is more appropriate.
Where is the incision?
Either inside the lower lip or in a crease beneath the chin. Both are generally inconspicuous.
Can the implant move?
Malposition is uncommon but possible, which is why placement and fixation are done carefully and reviewed.
Is the change permanent?
Implants are durable, though not guaranteed for life. Fat transfer results depend on graft survival.
How long is the swelling?
Most settles over two to three weeks, with final contour later.
