Breast Augmentation
The decision is less about size than about proportion, tissue cover and what will still look right in fifteen years.

01 · Understanding the concern
Why patients consider this
Patients come to this for different reasons: proportion that never developed as expected, asymmetry between the two sides, or volume lost after pregnancy and feeding. Each has a different surgical answer, and the right one is not always an implant.
02 · The procedure
What breast augmentation involves
Breast augmentation places an implant either behind the breast tissue or partly behind the chest muscle, through an incision in the inframammary fold, around the areola or in the axilla. Implant choice covers volume, profile, shape and surface, and is matched to your chest dimensions and tissue thickness rather than chosen from a catalogue. Where the breast has descended, augmentation alone may not be enough and a lift may be required in addition.
03 · Candidacy
Who may be considered
This is general guidance rather than a diagnosis. Suitability is decided by examination.
- Breast development complete
- Stable weight and, ideally, family planning considered
- Adequate tissue cover for the implant being considered
- Realistic about implants as devices requiring long-term monitoring
- Medically fit for anaesthesia
What it can address
Concerns it is used for
- Breast volume and proportion
- Asymmetry between the two sides
- Volume loss after pregnancy or weight change
- Upper pole fullness, within what tissue cover allows

04 · Planning
Why the planning matters more than the technique
Chest width, tissue thickness and skin quality set the limits on implant size far more than preference does. Choosing an implant wider than your chest base, or larger than your tissue can support, produces problems years later: visible edges, rippling, thinning tissue. Sizing is done with measurements and trials, not from photographs of other people.
05 · How it works
Step by step
- 01
Measurement
Chest base width, tissue thickness and breast footprint are measured.
- 02
Implant selection
Volume, profile and shape matched to those measurements and your goals.
- 03
Incision and placement
Access and pocket position agreed in advance and documented.
- 04
Surgery
Pocket created, implant placed, symmetry assessed on the table.
- 05
Support
Surgical bra fitted before discharge.
- 06
Follow-up
Scheduled reviews, plus long-term implant monitoring advice.
06 · The procedure journey
Before, during and after
Before
Investigations, anaesthetic assessment, breast imaging where indicated by age or history, and stopping smoking as advised.
During
General anaesthetic, usually day case or one night depending on the plan.
After
Tightness across the chest, swelling and restricted arm movement for the first days. A support bra is worn continuously as instructed.
07 · Recovery
What recovery generally involves
Desk work is commonly resumed within a week to ten days. Upper-body exercise is restricted for several weeks. Implants sit high initially and settle into position over weeks to months, which means the early appearance is not the final one. Scars mature over a year.
Recovery times are general ranges. Your own timeline depends on the extent of treatment, your health and your work, and is given at consultation.
- Wear the surgical bra as instructed, including at night
- No overhead lifting or chest training until cleared
- Expect the shape to change as swelling settles and implants drop
- Sleep on your back initially
- Attend long-term reviews; implants are devices, not a one-time event
08 · Outcomes
What to expect from the result
Increased volume and improved proportion within the limits of your tissue. Implants are not lifetime devices and may need replacement or removal at some point. Pregnancy, weight change and ageing continue to affect the breast. Results vary and are not guaranteed.
09 · Safety
Risks and considerations
Recognised risks include capsular contracture, implant rupture, rippling, asymmetry, changes in nipple sensation, infection, haematoma, and the need for further surgery over a lifetime. There are also rare implant-associated conditions that are discussed as part of informed consent. None of this is glossed over at consultation.
No procedure is risk-free. A full, individual discussion of risk forms part of consent and takes place before any decision is made.
10 · The surgeon
Why Dr. Swikriti Raniwala
The surgeon who assesses you performs the procedure and reviews you afterwards. Surgical work takes place in accredited surgical facilities with board-certified anaesthesiologists, and you leave the consultation with the plan and the costs in writing.

Questions patients ask
Breast Augmentation: common questions
How do I choose a size?
By measurement and trial sizing against your chest dimensions and tissue, not by cup size, which is not a standardised unit.
Above or below the muscle?
Both have advantages depending on your tissue thickness, activity and goals. The recommendation is made after examination.
Do implants need replacing?
They are not lifetime devices. Some need revision or replacement over time, and long-term monitoring is part of the plan.
Will I be able to breastfeed?
Many women can, but it cannot be guaranteed. Raise it before surgery if it matters to you.
Will implants affect mammograms?
Imaging is still possible but requires additional views. Tell the radiology unit you have implants.
Do I need a lift as well?
If the breast has descended, an implant alone may make it heavier rather than higher. Examination determines whether a lift is needed.
