Botox
A treatment for lines caused by movement. Lines that are present when the face is at rest need something else.

01 · Understanding the concern
Why patients consider this
Expression lines form where skin folds repeatedly over active muscle: across the forehead, between the brows, and at the outer corners of the eyes. In the early stages they appear only with movement. Over time they etch in and remain visible at rest, at which point injectables alone become less effective and skin treatment is added.
02 · The procedure
What botox involves
Botulinum toxin temporarily reduces the activity of specific facial muscles, softening the lines they create. Treatment is a matter of which muscles, how much, and where — the aim being to soften movement rather than eliminate it, so the face still expresses. Effect begins within days and is assessed at two weeks.
03 · Candidacy
Who may be considered
This is general guidance rather than a diagnosis. Suitability is decided by examination.
- Expression lines that soften when the face is relaxed
- Adults not pregnant or breastfeeding
- No neuromuscular condition affecting treatment
- Realistic expectations about softening rather than removal
- Willingness to maintain results on a schedule
What it can address
Concerns it is used for
- Forehead lines
- Frown lines between the brows
- Crow's feet at the outer eyes
- Bunny lines on the nose
- Chin dimpling
- Jaw and masseter treatment in selected cases
- Excessive underarm sweating, as a separate indication

04 · Planning
Why the planning matters more than the technique
Brow position matters more than dose. Over-treating the forehead in someone who uses those muscles to hold the brow up produces heaviness. Treatment is planned for how your face actually moves, which is why movement is assessed before anything is injected.
05 · How it works
Step by step
- 01
Assessment
Facial movement assessed at rest and in animation.
- 02
Planning
Injection points and doses mapped to your muscle activity.
- 03
Treatment
Injections given with a fine needle; the appointment is short.
- 04
Onset
Effect begins within days and develops over about two weeks.
- 05
Review
Assessment at two weeks, with adjustment if needed.
- 06
Maintenance
Repeat treatment scheduled according to how the effect wears off for you.
06 · The procedure journey
Before, during and after
Before
Avoid blood-thinning supplements where advised. Tell the clinic about any neuromuscular conditions or recent treatments.
During
A short clinic appointment, generally well tolerated without anaesthetic.
After
Small raised marks that settle within an hour, and occasional bruising at injection points.
07 · Recovery
What recovery generally involves
No downtime. Lying flat, rubbing the treated area, exercise and heat are avoided for a short period afterwards as instructed.
Recovery times are general ranges. Your own timeline depends on the extent of treatment, your health and your work, and is given at consultation.
- Stay upright for the period advised after treatment
- Do not rub or massage treated areas
- No exercise, sauna or steam that day
- Assess the result at two weeks
- Book maintenance before the effect fully wears off
08 · Outcomes
What to expect from the result
Softening of movement-related lines, typically lasting a number of months and varying by individual, area and dose. Static lines present at rest need skin treatment in addition. Results vary and are not guaranteed.
09 · Safety
Risks and considerations
Risks include bruising, headache, temporary brow or eyelid heaviness, asymmetry, and an unintended effect on nearby muscles. These are generally temporary because the effect itself is temporary. It is not used in pregnancy, breastfeeding or certain neuromuscular conditions.
No procedure is risk-free. A full, individual discussion of risk forms part of consent and takes place before any decision is made.
10 · The surgeon
Why Dr. Swikriti Raniwala
The surgeon who assesses you performs the procedure and reviews you afterwards. Surgical work takes place in accredited surgical facilities with board-certified anaesthesiologists, and you leave the consultation with the plan and the costs in writing.

Questions patients ask
Botox: common questions
How long does Botox last?
Typically a number of months, varying by individual, area and dose. Your own interval becomes predictable after the first two treatments.
Will my face look frozen?
Not if dosing respects how your face moves. The aim is softened movement, not absent movement.
When will I see results?
Onset within days, with the full effect at around two weeks, which is when it is assessed.
Does it help lines I have at rest?
Partly, over time, but static lines usually need skin treatment such as resurfacing or microneedling in addition.
Is it safe long term?
It has been in clinical use for decades. Individual suitability is assessed at consultation.
Can I have it before an event?
Allow at least two weeks so the effect has developed and any bruising has settled.
