Scalp Micropigmentation
Pigment placed in the scalp to imitate the shadow of closely cropped hair. It does not grow hair; it changes what the eye reads as density.

01 · Understanding the concern
Why patients consider this
Not everyone is a candidate for surgery, and not everyone wants it. Limited donor supply, extensive loss, a preference for a shaved look, or simply not wanting an operation are all valid reasons to consider micropigmentation instead. It is also used to reduce the contrast between scalp and hair in diffuse thinning, which makes thinning read as less obvious.
02 · The procedure
What scalp micropigmentation involves
Pigment is deposited in tiny dots in the upper layers of the scalp using specialised needles, matched in tone to your hair and skin. Work is built across two or more sessions so density and colour can be adjusted rather than committed to at once. The effect is cosmetic camouflage, not hair growth.
03 · Candidacy
Who may be considered
This is general guidance rather than a diagnosis. Suitability is decided by examination.
- Extensive loss with insufficient donor supply for surgery
- Men who wear their hair very short or shaved
- Diffuse thinning where scalp show-through is the main complaint
- Camouflage of transplant or other scalp scars
- People who do not want surgery
What it can address
Concerns it is used for
- The appearance of a shaved, even hairline
- Scalp visibility through thinning hair
- Donor or strip scars
- Areas of patchy density

04 · Planning
Why the planning matters more than the technique
Tone and density are chosen conservatively at the first session and built upwards. Going too dark or too dense at the start is difficult to undo, so the first session deliberately under-delivers.
05 · How it works
Step by step
- 01
Design
Hairline shape and density are agreed and drawn before work begins.
- 02
Tone matching
Pigment tone is selected against your hair and skin.
- 03
First session
A base layer is placed conservatively.
- 04
Second session
Density and depth are built once the first layer has settled.
- 05
Refinement
Further sessions if needed for blending or contrast.
- 06
Maintenance
Periodic top-ups as pigment softens over time.
06 · The procedure journey
Before, during and after
Before
Avoid sunburn and heavy exfoliation before sessions. Come with the hair length you intend to keep.
During
Sessions run a few hours. Discomfort is generally mild and topical anaesthetic can be used.
After
Redness for a day or two. Pigment appears darker initially and softens as it settles.
07 · Recovery
What recovery generally involves
No downtime beyond mild redness. Washing, sweating, swimming and sun exposure are restricted for a short period between sessions as instructed.
Recovery times are general ranges. Your own timeline depends on the extent of treatment, your health and your work, and is given at consultation.
- No swimming, sauna or heavy sweating for the days specified
- Sun protection once healed, as UV fades pigment
- Moisturise as advised
- Keep to the session spacing for accurate colour assessment
08 · Outcomes
What to expect from the result
The result is a visual impression of density or a cleanly shaved scalp. It fades gradually over years and needs maintenance. It looks best at consistent short hair lengths.
09 · Safety
Risks and considerations
Considerations include pigment fading or shifting in tone over time, sensitivity reactions, and the fact that the result is permanent enough to require laser removal if you dislike it. Candidacy and expectations are discussed carefully before the first session.
No procedure is risk-free. A full, individual discussion of risk forms part of consent and takes place before any decision is made.
10 · The surgeon
Why Dr. Swikriti Raniwala
The surgeon who assesses you performs the procedure and reviews you afterwards. Surgical work takes place in accredited surgical facilities with board-certified anaesthesiologists, and you leave the consultation with the plan and the costs in writing.

Questions patients ask
Scalp Micropigmentation: common questions
Does micropigmentation grow hair?
No. It is cosmetic camouflage and does not affect follicles.
How long does it last?
It softens gradually over years and typically needs periodic maintenance sessions.
Can it cover a transplant scar?
Often yes. Scar camouflage is one of its more reliable uses.
Will it look obvious?
That depends on tone matching, density and hairline design, which is why the first session is deliberately conservative.
Can I still have a transplant afterwards?
Usually yes, though the two need to be planned together rather than in isolation.
Is it painful?
Most people describe mild discomfort. Topical anaesthetic can be used.
