Acne & Scar Treatment
Scar type decides the treatment. Treating every acne scar the same way is why so many courses disappoint.

01 · Understanding the concern
Why patients consider this
Acne scarring is not one condition. Rolling scars are tethered depressions with sloping edges. Boxcar scars have sharp walls. Ice-pick scars are narrow and deep. Post-inflammatory pigmentation is not scarring at all, though it is often what patients are actually unhappy about. The treatments for each differ, and combining them is usually necessary.
02 · The procedure
What acne & scar treatment involves
Assessment classifies the scarring present, since most people have more than one type. Treatment is then combined: microneedling or fractional laser for texture and rolling scars, subcision to release tethered scars, focal treatment for ice-pick scars, and pigment-directed treatment where marks rather than scars are the concern. Active acne is controlled first, because treating scars on actively inflamed skin makes matters worse.
03 · Candidacy
Who may be considered
This is general guidance rather than a diagnosis. Suitability is decided by examination.
- Acne that is controlled or being medically managed
- Scarring that has been present for a period rather than newly forming
- Willingness to commit to a course over months
- Realistic expectations about improvement rather than erasure
- No recent isotretinoin use, subject to the interval advised
What it can address
Concerns it is used for
- Rolling scars
- Boxcar scars
- Ice-pick scars
- Post-inflammatory pigmentation and marks
- Overall skin texture

04 · Planning
Why the planning matters more than the technique
Active acne is treated before scar work begins. Beyond that, planning is honest about the ceiling: a good course meaningfully improves the appearance of scarring but does not return the skin to its pre-acne state. Saying that at the outset is more useful than saying it at session four.
05 · How it works
Step by step
- 01
Classification
Scar types identified and photographed under standard lighting.
- 02
Acne control
Active acne managed first where present.
- 03
Combination plan
Modalities selected per scar type and sequenced across the course.
- 04
Treatment course
Sessions delivered at planned intervals.
- 05
Pigment management
Marks treated alongside with topicals and sun protection.
- 06
Review
Reassessment against baseline photographs at defined points.
06 · The procedure journey
Before, during and after
Before
Skin priming as prescribed, sun avoidance, and pausing actives before sessions as instructed.
During
Varies by modality. Topical anaesthetic is used for needling, laser and subcision.
After
Redness, swelling and sometimes bruising after subcision, settling over days depending on the treatment used.
07 · Recovery
What recovery generally involves
Downtime varies with the modality used in each session. Sun protection is essential throughout. Improvement accumulates over the course and continues for months afterwards as collagen remodels.
Recovery times are general ranges. Your own timeline depends on the extent of treatment, your health and your work, and is given at consultation.
- Daily sun protection throughout the course and afterwards
- No picking or exfoliating between sessions
- Keep to intervals; compressed schedules do not improve results
- Photograph progress under consistent lighting
- Continue acne control treatment as prescribed
08 · Outcomes
What to expect from the result
Meaningful improvement in the appearance of scarring across a combination course. Scars are improved, not removed. Pigmentation often responds faster than texture. Results vary and are not guaranteed.
09 · Safety
Risks and considerations
Risks depend on the modality and include post-inflammatory pigmentation, prolonged redness, bruising after subcision, infection and, rarely, worsening of scarring. Case selection and skin preparation are the main safeguards.
No procedure is risk-free. A full, individual discussion of risk forms part of consent and takes place before any decision is made.
10 · The surgeon
Why Dr. Swikriti Raniwala
The surgeon who assesses you performs the procedure and reviews you afterwards. Surgical work takes place in accredited surgical facilities with board-certified anaesthesiologists, and you leave the consultation with the plan and the costs in writing.

Questions patients ask
Acne & Scar Treatment: common questions
Can acne scars be removed completely?
No. A good course improves their appearance substantially. Removal is not a realistic goal and should not be promised.
Which treatment is best for acne scars?
It depends on the scar type, and most people need a combination rather than a single modality.
Are dark marks the same as scars?
No. Post-inflammatory pigmentation is flat discolouration that often fades with treatment and sun protection. Scars are textural.
Can I have treatment while on acne medication?
Active acne is usually controlled first, and certain medications require an interval before procedures. This is assessed at consultation.
How long is the course?
Typically several sessions over months, with improvement continuing after the final session.
Will the scars come back?
Treated scars do not return, but new acne can create new scarring, which is why acne control matters.
