Laser Hair Removal
Hair reduction rather than hair removal, achieved over a course because only hairs in the active growth phase respond.

01 · Understanding the concern
Why patients consider this
Shaving, waxing and threading are a permanent routine rather than a solution, and for many people cause ingrown hairs, irritation and pigmentation in the treated areas. Laser offers long-term reduction, but expectations should match the word reduction: most people retain some finer hair and need occasional maintenance.
02 · The procedure
What laser hair removal involves
Laser light is absorbed by pigment in the hair follicle and converted to heat, damaging the follicle's ability to produce hair. Because follicles cycle, only those in the active growth phase at the time of treatment respond, which is why sessions are spaced across weeks and repeated. Wavelength and settings are selected for skin tone and hair colour.
03 · Candidacy
Who may be considered
This is general guidance rather than a diagnosis. Suitability is decided by examination.
- Dark hair, which responds better than grey, red or very fine hair
- Any skin tone, with settings adjusted appropriately
- No recent sun exposure or tanning at the treatment site
- Not pregnant
- Willing to complete a course rather than a single session
What it can address
Concerns it is used for
- Facial hair
- Underarms
- Arms and legs
- Bikini area
- Back and chest
- Ingrown hairs and irritation from shaving or waxing

04 · Planning
Why the planning matters more than the technique
Hormonal causes of facial hair growth are worth identifying before a course begins, since treating the hair without addressing the cause leads to recurring growth and disappointment. Where indicated, investigation is arranged first.
05 · How it works
Step by step
- 01
Assessment
Skin tone, hair colour and any relevant hormonal history reviewed.
- 02
Test patch
Performed where settings or skin tone warrant it.
- 03
Preparation
The area is shaved, not waxed, before treatment.
- 04
Treatment
Laser applied with cooling, with sessions timed by area.
- 05
Course
Sessions repeated at planned intervals across hair cycles.
- 06
Maintenance
Occasional sessions after the course to manage regrowth.
06 · The procedure journey
Before, during and after
Before
Shave the area as instructed, do not wax or thread for the period advised, and avoid sun exposure or tanning.
During
A clinic appointment with a snapping sensation and cooling. Duration depends on the area.
After
Redness and follicular swelling for a few hours to a day. Treated hairs shed over the following week or two.
07 · Recovery
What recovery generally involves
No downtime. Heat, sauna, swimming and exercise are avoided briefly. Sun protection on treated areas is important throughout the course.
Recovery times are general ranges. Your own timeline depends on the extent of treatment, your health and your work, and is given at consultation.
- No sun exposure or tanning on treated areas during the course
- Avoid heat, sauna and swimming for 24 to 48 hours
- Shave rather than wax between sessions
- Keep to the planned intervals
- Expect shedding, which is not regrowth
08 · Outcomes
What to expect from the result
Substantial long-term reduction in hair density and thickness over a course, with maintenance usually required. Complete permanent removal is not a realistic expectation. Results vary and are not guaranteed.
09 · Safety
Risks and considerations
Risks include burns, blistering, pigmentation changes in either direction, and paradoxical hair growth in rare cases. Appropriate device selection and settings for skin tone are essential, particularly in deeper phototypes.
No procedure is risk-free. A full, individual discussion of risk forms part of consent and takes place before any decision is made.

Questions patients ask
Laser Hair Removal: common questions
How many sessions will I need?
Usually several sessions spaced weeks apart, with the number depending on the area, hair type and hormonal factors.
Is it permanent?
It provides long-term reduction rather than permanent removal. Maintenance sessions are usually needed.
Does it work on all skin tones?
Yes, with the correct wavelength and settings. Deeper skin tones require appropriate device selection.
Does it work on grey or blonde hair?
Poorly. The laser targets pigment, so light or grey hair responds little.
Is it painful?
Most people describe a snapping sensation. Cooling is used during treatment.
Can I wax between sessions?
No. Waxing removes the follicle target. Shaving is fine.
