What actually determines hair transplant cost
Per-graft pricing is easy to advertise and tells you almost nothing about what you will pay or what you will get.

Graft numbers are an estimate, not a menu
The number of grafts you need depends on the area being covered, your existing density, your hair calibre and your donor supply. Two people asking for the same hairline can need very different numbers.
Any figure quoted before your scalp has been examined is a guess. That applies to numbers quoted from a photograph as well.
Technique and session structure
FUE and FUT differ in how long harvesting takes and in what support is required. Larger sessions take longer and involve more of the team for more hours, which is reflected in cost.
Some plans are better delivered across two sessions. That is a clinical decision about donor supply, and it changes the total.
What a low per-graft price can hide
Graft counting practices differ. So do session sizes, team experience, the time taken over placement, and whether the surgeon is present throughout.
The variables that determine whether your result looks natural in ten years — hairline design, donor management, graft handling — are the ones that do not appear in a per-graft figure.
What else belongs in the budget
Medical treatment to protect existing hair, where it is advised, is an ongoing cost rather than a one-off. Follow-up and, for larger areas, a possible second session should also be factored in.
Ask for the total plan in writing rather than a rate. A written estimate after examination is a more useful comparison between clinics than a headline price.
Questions patients ask
Questions on this topic
Why will nobody quote me a price on the phone?
Because graft numbers cannot be estimated without examining the scalp and donor area.
Is a cheaper transplant worse?
Not automatically, but the things that determine a natural long-term result do not show up in a per-graft rate.
Should I budget for a second session?
For larger areas, it is sensible to discuss at the outset whether one session will be sufficient.
